How does bedside notarization work?
We come to the patient — hospital room, ICU, rehab, home. We verify ID, make sure they understand what they're signing, witness it, and complete the certificate. Most bedside signings take about 20 minutes. We've done this many times and we know how to make it calm.
Healthcare directives don't wait for convenient hours. When a family member is in the hospital and needs a Living Will or Healthcare Power of Attorney signed today, the last thing anyone needs is friction at the bedside. How we verify the signer is ready
Before anything is signed, we have a brief, unhurried conversation with the patient. We're confirming three things: that they recognize the document, understand what signing it means, and are doing it of their own free will. Medication, fatigue, or a serious diagnosis don't automatically disqualify someone — what matters is present awareness in the moment we meet.
If there's any question about capacity, we'll be honest with you about what we're observing. We are an impartial witness, not a medical authority.
What you'll need at the bedside
— A current photo ID for the patient (driver's license, state ID, or passport). If the wallet is at home, family members can bring it. — The completed but unsigned document. Please don't have the patient sign in advance — we have to watch the signature happen. — Any witnesses your specific form requires. Some hospital staff can serve as disinterested witnesses; others cannot. If you're unsure, tell us when you book and we'll help arrange it.
Coordinating with hospital staff
When you call, share the hospital, the unit or floor, the room number, and any visiting-hour or ICU access notes. We coordinate quietly with the nursing station so we're not interrupting care. Most bedside signings take about twenty minutes from arrival to completed certificate.
