Ohio Vehicle Title Transfer — A Practical Checklist for Buyer and Seller

Ohio vehicle title transfers require a notary on the assignment of title before the buyer can register the vehicle with the BMV. The transfer itself is quick — fifteen minutes at the kitchen table or in the seller's driveway — when the paperwork is ready. Most appointments go smoothly. The ones that do not almost always trace back to one of a handful of preventable problems.

Before We Arrive — What Has to Be Ready

The non-negotiables:

— Current government-issued photo ID for the seller, whose signature is being notarized — The original title, with the seller's signature line left unsigned (no exceptions) — The buyer's information filled in on the title, so the title is complete before the seller signs — Agreement on the sale price, odometer reading, and date of sale — The seller present in person. The buyer does not need to be there

We notarize the seller's signature only. If the seller's signature is already on the title, we cannot notarize it. If the buyer's information is missing, get it from the buyer before the appointment so the title is complete.

Seller — Have Ready

A few items the seller specifically needs to handle:

— Lien release from any lender that held the title (in writing) — Accurate odometer reading at the time of sale — Any second-page disclosures the title requires — Bill of sale if you are using one

A lien that has not been released is the most common cause of a stalled transfer. Confirm the release is in hand before the appointment.

Buyer — Plan For This After

The notarization is one step. The buyer still has to:

— File the title with the County Clerk of Courts Title Office within thirty days — Pay the sales tax and title fee at filing — Register the vehicle with the BMV after the title is issued

— The title was signed in advance, which voids the notarization — The buyer's information was left blank on the title — A name on the title does not match the photo ID — The lien release was assumed but never actually obtained from the lender
